Maybe you remember the movie The End of the Spear. It was about Nate Saint, Jim Elliot and 3 other men, also known as the “Auca Five”, who were murdered by members of a primitive Ecuadorian tribe. There was an excerpt today in The One Year Book of Christian History.
The movie was done well and was quite enjoyable. At the end of the movie, I remember feeling a certain amount of sadness that the 5 men that were killed left behind young families, wives, parents, brothers, & sisters. At the time, I was a new mom and couldn’t begin to imagine how those wives must have felt!
Those men knew that the Auca tribe was hostile and yet, they were willing to put their lives at risk to take the Gospel message to them. They had counted the cost and were willing to die.
It was 1956 when they were martyred. ONE short year later, a young woman named Dayuma was the first Auca convert. Eventually ALL five men who had murdered the missionaries were converted and became leaders of the Auca church!!! In June 1992, the Aucas finally received the New Testament in their language.
I was struck with the thought that …
**God will do whatever it takes to further His kingdom – no one can stop Him and nothing can get in His way!
**He’s not concerned about us, our comfort or our convenience but is first and foremost concerned about the furtherance of His kingdom.
“The death of the five missionaries was initially considered a tragedy by many. Yet in God’s providence the goal the missionaries had set for themselves was achieved beyond their greatest expectations. It is thrilling to have a God who can bring victory out of what appears to be tragedy.”
